Overview

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewerage systems, pipelines and railways. Civil engineering is traditionally broken into a number of sub-disciplines. It is the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.
In general, civil engineering is concerned with the overall interface of human created fixed projects with the greater world. General civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers to design grading, drainage, pavement, water supply, sewer service, dams, electric and communications supply. General civil engineering is also referred to as site engineering, a branch of civil engineering that primarily focuses on converting a tract of land from one usage to another. Site engineers spend time visiting project sites, meeting with stakeholders, and preparing construction plans. Civil engineers apply the principles of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering and construction engineering to residential, commercial, industrial and public works projects of all sizes and levels of construction.
The Department of Civil Engineering at ACEM with its multifaceted faculty continues to maintain and cultivate its strong links with the infrastructural industry and academic and research institutions both within and outside the country. Besides high quality teaching, the Department is actively involved in basic and applied research and consultancy and provides high quality technical advisory support through various R&D projects and consultancy to various organizations.

Career

Civil engineers design, construct, supervise, operate, and maintain large construction projects and systems, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Many civil engineers work in design, construction, research, and education.
Civil Engineering is a core and evergreen branch. Since our country is a developing country. Thus, for construction and maintenance of building and highways, qualified Civil Engineers are required by such construction companies.
There are ample amount of job opportunities for B.E./B.Tech. Civil Engineering graduates in Government as well as Private sector. When it comes to Government sector, organizations and department’s like- PWD, Irrigation Department, Jal Nigam, BRO, CWC, Indian Railways, DRDO, Indian Armed Forces, BHEL, NHAI, DMRC, State Wise Road Transport boards etc recruits Civil Engineers.
Private sector offers even more job opportunities. Companies like L&T, DLF, JP Infra, Sadbhawna group, Amrapali, Supertech, Reliance infra, BCC Pvt Ltd For tunnel project, Soma hire large numbers of Civil Engineers to function efficiently.
Graduates, after completing PG M.Tech program, may take up teaching job also. By pursuing Ph.D program, one may also take up a job in the Research and Development sector.

Duties

Civil engineers typically do the following:
1. Analyze survey reports, maps, and other data to plan projects.
2. Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors in planning stages and risk analysis.
3. Compile and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies verifying that projects comply with various regulations.
4. Perform or oversee soil testing to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations.
5. Test building materials, such as concrete, asphalt, or steel, for use in particular projects.
6. Provide cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labor to determine a project’s economic feasibility.
7. Use design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and structures in line with industry and government standards.
8. Perform or oversee, surveying operations to establish reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction.
9. Present their findings to the public on topics such as bid proposals, environmental impact statements, or property descriptions.
10.Manage the repair, maintenance, and replacement of public and private infrastructure.

Key features of the Department:

1. Excellent Teacher- Student Ratio i.e 1:5.
2. Excellent teaching learning process through modern teaching aids like LCD Projector & OHP.
3. 24 Hrs Internet connectivity in all labs.
4. Syllabus beyond curriculum to enhance practical knowledge of students.
5. Extra classes without fee for weak student during summer vacation.

Co-Curriculum Activities:

Apart from curriculum, our students have been participating in various tech fests and non technical programs organized at inter and intra-college level and won various prizes.
